Praying Daily: For A Strategy

Matthew 6:33 tells us to seek God first on what to do. Whether it’s through praying out loud, in your head or in your prayer journal. God wants us to make time for Him in prayer a daily practice. This doesn’t have to be complicated or perfect; it just has to be authentic.

Praying to God can look different depending on your situation. Sometimes prayers are short, other times long. Remember, prayer is a two-way conversation: where we speak, and God listens, or God speaks, and we listen. When God wants to guide you, you need to be ready to hear Him. To do this, we must make it a habit to spend time with God regularly. This means building a personal relationship through worship, reading His word, or simply talking to Him.

The Foundation—Knowing God's Will

Prayer is the first step when we want to know God's will. This comes by talking to Him, asking Him questions, thinking about His word and letting the Holy Spirit guide us on what to do or avoid. Depending on what you’re asking for, your answers may come quickly; other times, they come when we least expect.

Knowing God’s Word For Yourself

God wants to use His word (the Bible) to speak to us, but we have to develop the ability to interpret scripture for ourselves. This might look like you using tools and systems such as:

  • Bible commentary to give you the foundation of what scripture means.

  • Study Guide to help you go through the Bible at your own pace.

  • YouTube for listening to teachings or sermons that break down scripture and put it into practical application.

  • Audio Bible (text-to-speech feature) — this will help you understand God’s word clearly and hear it in context. I would recommend starting with stories of the Bible and then books of the Bible if you want to go more in-depth. (My goal next year (2026) is to go through the Bible in chronological order).

The Framework—Seeking God’s Will

Finding A Prayer Routine

Every routine has steps you follow, sometimes consciously, sometimes not. Having a prayer routine to seek God’s guidance on what to do right now vs in the future is a great way to include Him. Whether for 5 minutes or longer, a real-life example: for me, when I wake up (between 7 and 8 am), I block out 90 minutes each morning to spend with God; this is time for me and God to connect and grow spiritually. I also fast during this time to better hear God and plan my day or week. I start by greeting God, then share what’s on my mind or any dreams I had that night. Next, I read a Bible verse or a chapter from a book I’m studying. This often inspires a message to write or deep reflection. Other times, God will lead me to watch a video on a topic He wants me to hear—this happens when He wants me to learn something or speak to me through someone else's content.

Prayer Tip: When you make it a habit or a daily discipline, it will set you up for godly success.

The Purpose Of A Prayer Routine

The goal of any routine is to make doing tasks simple and automatic without overthinking it. If you’re like me, seeking God isn’t always easy or frequent. Sometimes we don’t prioritise spending time with Him as the key to life and ministry, or we find excuses why we don’t have the time. Yet, we don’t see the time we do waste that could be given to God or the small moments throughout our day where we can check in with God. Let’s be honest: when we do have time, we should choose to spend some of it with God beyond just Sundays.

Spending time with God needs careful planning and a routine that fits your life. Don’t compare your time with others. Instead, create a way to hear from God yourself. Avoid delaying or choosing other less important things to replace that time with God, and resist the desire to procrastinate when it comes to implementing a process that works for you.

Prayer Tip: When you create a prayer system that works for you, you’ll always find God.

Call to action: Take a look at your day and come up with an ideal system for praying to God. Remember, God wants quality over quantity, so don’t overcomplicate it; start with something simple that you can make a habit and be consistent with, then you can add to it over time.

How To Seeking God For The Strategy

Remember, God is our source, not a genie. He will direct your steps according to the plan He has for you, your business and your ministry. This is why when we go to God in prayer, we have to submit our desires and will to seek His for us—which looks like God giving us prophetic insight into what He has envisioned for our day and ministry or being ok with God showing up unannounced and disrupting your plans, while saying yes, if He wants you to pivot without knowing why.

Note to self: there are going to be times when we have to be open to the way God wants to lead us in life and ministry and be ok following His lead even when it makes no sense to us. But if you’re not sure it’s God, take action and see what happens. Sometimes God wants us to learn how to trust Him to order our steps even with a plan—Proverbs 3:5-6!

Personal Testimony

Sometimes when I seek God on the strategy for my day, it doesn’t always feel good in the moment, especially when I thought my plan was good enough. But when I stopped trying to control what my day should look like, I was able to see why God’s way was better. Yes, in the beginning, you may struggle with what God is telling you to do, especially when it’s something different from what you originally wanted to do.

Take note: God may not change your plans completely, sometimes just enough to nudge you down the right path or in the right direction.

Call to action: Get your plans out of your head and onto paper. Try and make this a weekly or daily habit, as this can help you strategise with God freely. Brain dump what you think your day should look like and bring it to God in prayer. This is not going to be perfect in the beginning, especially when your ego gets in the way. But as you make this a self-discipline to seek God yourself, you will build trust and confidence in Him.
